Hair transplant in Turkey: who performs your surgery, and the red flags to watch for

Ask who will make the incisions and extract your grafts, by name and in writing. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) warns that unlicensed technicians performing these steps is the core of the “black market” problem. A brand name, a device or a package cannot answer that question for you.

Why this question comes first

The ISHRS treats hair transplantation, including FUE, as surgery. It lists diagnosis, hairline design, anesthesia, incisions and follicle extraction as the surgeon’s responsibility. In its ISHRS – 2025 Practice Census, 59.4% of responding members said there were black market clinics in their city, and on average 10% of their repair cases followed a black market transplant. These are survey answers from ISHRS members worldwide, not figures for Turkey.

Red flags

  • The clinic markets a brand and does not name the responsible doctor.
  • A sales coordinator, rather than a doctor, assesses your hair loss.
  • “Unlimited” grafts are promised, although donor hair is finite.
  • A technique name such as “Sapphire FUE” is sold as the main reason to choose the clinic.
  • The offer focuses on the price, flights and hotel, with little on who operates.
  • A doctor appears only to draw the hairline or for a brief visit.

Questions to ask in writing

  • Who evaluates my hair loss, and is this a doctor?
  • Who designs the hairline, gives the anesthetic, makes the incisions and extracts the grafts? What license does each person hold?
  • Which steps do technicians perform?
  • How many patients does the team treat on the same day?
  • Are you on the Turkish Ministry of Health’s authorized list, and under what legal name?
  • Who do I contact after I return to the US, and who pays for any repair?

Check the license

Ask for the facility’s official name and look for it on the Ministry’s list. A listing shows authorization for health tourism; it does not tell you who will operate on you. Hair transplant clinics in Istanbul and their list status →

Frequently asked questions

Is a hair transplant in Turkey safe?

There is no single answer for a whole country. Risk depends on the facility, who performs each step, your health and your follow-up. Check these directly, and speak to a doctor at home first.

Can technicians perform a hair transplant?

The ISHRS says surgical steps such as incisions and extractions are the surgeon’s responsibility. Ask each clinic which steps technicians perform, and check what the local rules allow.

Does a clinic’s reputation online show who operates?

No. The ISHRS notes that reviews and social media do not show who makes the incisions.
