Turkey teeth explained: veneers or crowns, what to ask, what can go wrong

“Turkey teeth” is the UK nickname for a full smile makeover done in Turkey. Many people who ask for veneers actually receive crowns, which need far more of the natural tooth to be filed down. Before you book, ask in writing which treatment you will have on which teeth, the material and brand, and how many teeth will be prepared.

Veneers vs crowns

Veneers are thin shells bonded to the front of the tooth; only a small amount of enamel is removed. Crowns cover the whole tooth, which is filed down on all sides. Crowns can be the right choice for damaged teeth, but on healthy teeth they are irreversible and can lead to sensitivity or root canal treatment later.

The questions to ask

  • Veneers or crowns – on exactly which teeth?
  • How much of each tooth will be removed?
  • Which material (porcelain, E-max, zirconia) and which lab or brand?
  • Who is the dentist, and what are their qualifications?
  • How many visits and how many days in Turkey?
  • What guarantee is there, and who pays for repairs?

Back in the UK

Ask the clinic for your X-rays, a treatment report and the materials used. Register with a UK dentist and tell them what was done. UK dentists are regulated by the General Dental Council; treatment in Turkey is not.

Frequently asked questions

Are Turkey teeth veneers or crowns?

Often crowns. Ask in writing which treatment you will have on each tooth before you travel.

Can crowns be reversed?

No. Because the tooth is filed down, it will always need a crown afterwards.
