Tummy tuck in Turkey: recovery, how long to stay and what to ask
A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) removes loose skin and fat from the lower abdomen and usually repairs separated stomach muscles. It is done under general anaesthetic, takes 2–4 hours, and most surgeons ask you to stay 7–10 days in Istanbul before flying home. Expect 2–3 weeks off desk work and about 6 weeks without heavy lifting or exercise.

Key facts
Typical ranges for a healthy adult (sources at the bottom of the page). Your surgeon or dentist sets your own plan after examining you.
What it is
During a full abdominoplasty the surgeon makes a low horizontal incision from hip to hip, removes excess skin and fat below the belly button, tightens the abdominal muscles (often separated after pregnancy – diastasis recti) and repositions the belly button. A mini tummy tuck treats only the area below the belly button with a shorter scar. An extended tummy tuck also addresses the flanks. Liposuction is often combined to refine the waist.
A tummy tuck is not a weight-loss operation. It works best when your weight has been stable for several months.
Techniques
Full abdominoplasty
Hip-to-hip scar, muscle repair, new belly button opening. The standard option after pregnancy or major weight loss.
Mini abdominoplasty
Shorter scar, no belly button repositioning. Only suitable when the excess skin is limited to the lower abdomen.
Extended abdominoplasty
A longer scar that also treats the flanks and lower back, often after major weight loss.
Fleur-de-lis
Adds a vertical scar to remove excess skin horizontally as well – mainly after massive weight loss.
Combined with liposuction
Liposuction of the flanks or back in the same operation; this increases operating time and recovery.
Who it suits
Usually a good candidate
- Your weight has been stable for at least 6–12 months
- Loose skin or separated muscles that exercise cannot fix
- You have finished having children (or plan to wait)
- You are a non-smoker or can stop several weeks before and after surgery
Think twice / discuss first
- You still plan to lose a lot of weight
- You plan another pregnancy
- You smoke and cannot stop (wound-healing problems are much more common)
- BMI above about 30, diabetes, clotting disorders or heart disease – discuss with the surgeon first
Your stay in Istanbul, step by step
- Day 1Arrival, transfer, consultation with the surgeon, markings, blood tests and anaesthetist review.
- Day 2Surgery (2–4 hours). You wake up in the hospital with a compression garment and usually drains.
- Days 3–4Discharge to the hotel; short walks several times a day to prevent clots. Walking slightly bent forward is normal.
- Days 5–7Check-up and dressing change; drains are often removed.
- Days 7–10Final check; the surgeon decides when you are fit to fly. Wear compression stockings and walk during the flight.
Recovery timeline
- Week 1Swelling, tightness and tiredness; walking slightly bent forward.
- Weeks 2–3Most people return to desk work; still no lifting.
- Week 6Usually cleared for exercise and lifting; the compression garment is often stopped.
- Months 3–6Swelling settles; numbness above the scar improves slowly.
- Months 12–18The scar matures and fades.
Risks and complications
- Seroma (fluid build-up), which may need draining
- Wound-healing problems, especially in smokers
- Blood clots in the legs or lungs (DVT/PE) – a reason to walk early and wear stockings
- Infection, bleeding (haematoma)
- Numbness of the lower abdomen
- A wide, raised or asymmetric scar; belly button shape problems
This list is not exhaustive. Your surgeon should explain the risks that apply to you, in writing, before you consent.
Cost: what drives the price
The price depends on the type of abdominoplasty (mini, full, extended), whether liposuction or muscle repair is included, the hospital, the number of nights and what the package covers (tests, garments, medication, hotel, transfers, check-ups). Compare written quotes that list all of these.
Few Istanbul facilities publish prices for this treatment on their own website, and we only show prices that facilities publish themselves. Ask for a written, itemised quote.

Frequently asked questions
How long do I need to stay in Turkey after a tummy tuck?
Most surgeons recommend 7–10 days, so that the first check-ups and drain removal happen before you fly. Your surgeon decides when you are fit to fly.
When can I go back to work after a tummy tuck?
Typically 2–3 weeks for desk work, longer for physical jobs. Heavy lifting and exercise usually wait about 6 weeks.
Can a tummy tuck be combined with liposuction or breast surgery?
Often, yes, but combining procedures lengthens surgery and recovery and may increase risks. Ask the surgeon whether it is safe for you and how long you would need to stay.
Will I have a scar?
Yes. A full tummy tuck leaves a low hip-to-hip scar, usually hidden by underwear. It matures over 12–18 months.
